Biography

I grew up in rural Indiana and attended Indiana University and Purdue University for my bachelor’s degree, with a major in Psychology. I attended Penn State University for my Master’s and Doctorate. My area of emphasis was learning and memory, especially learning from text (or “prose learning” as it was called back then). I taught at Illinois State for 3 years before moving to Northwest Missouri State University, where I have stayed for about 30 years now. Most of my research has been a mixture of laboratory research and classroom research on learning and memory. In the late 1990s, I had the opportunity to evaluate a local, federally-funded abstinence-only sex education program, aimed at reducing the high teen pregnancy rate here in northwest Missouri. I have served two stints as department chair. On a personal note, I have been happily married for 40 years and have two adult children.

Biography

Upon completion of my doctorate in biochemistry at the National Taiwan University in 1994, I joined the faculty of the Graduate Institute of Biomedical Technology, Taipei Medical University, where I directed research combining basic genomics and breast cancer research with translational research. My major research interests are the molecular mechanisms of environmentally and chemically induced carcinogenesis, drug-induced apoptosis and cell cycle disruption. Recently, my research has focused on the analysis of the mechanisms involving nicotinic receptors in human breast cancer formation. These findings led to the development of powerful antitumor agents, and the cloning of a nicotinic receptor gene linked to breast cancer has led to investigation of this receptor as a potential therapeutic target for smoking-induced breast cancer and other cancers. I was voted chairman of the Translational Cancer Research Center at the Taipei Medical University in 2009. This work will further establish a translational research team in which basic and clinical researchers collaborate to focus on the mechanisms of breast cancer formation.

Biography

As healthcare is entering into a rapid change phase due to technological advances, regulatory changes, biotechnical and genetic discoveries, old models of healthcare delivery become outdated and in need of radical changes. Research is essential in exploring new healthcare models and delivery channels. I have been working in the industry for the last 15 years. I am very interested in leveraging the industry experiences with research methodology and platform to explore innovative healthcare delivery models and channels. It’s an ambitious goal, but I think that with the support of other collages, we can start the journey. There are interesting topics to consider for instance robotic surgery, mobile health, diagnostics, convergence of engineering and biology for medicine delivery and disease identification. Innovative business models is another areas that needs to be explored to identify new models that focus on health outcomes rather than episodes of care. My earlier research at the Medical College of Virginia on hospital journey toward specialization utilization ecological and natural selection theories. In addition, I have worked on outcomes analysis for congestive heart failure, asthma and otitis media.
