Biography

Dr. Claudia Thorne has extensive professional experience working in health and human services nonprofit organizations at local and national levels addressing the life span. Dr. Thorne is an Assistant Professor of Social Work in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Coppin State University in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Thorne was appointed to the Virginia Jones Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Council for the State of Maryland by the Governor and contributed to the Maryland State Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias 2022-2026. She is a Maryland Dementia Friends Champion. She has served as a member of the Alzheimer’s Association State Champion Program and the Age-Friendly D.C. Task Force. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and National Association of Black Social Workers. Dr. Thorne’s current research interests are aging across the lifespan, caregiving among Black persons and persons of color, and social work pedagogy. She serves on numerous committees at Coppin State University, including Vice President for the Institutional Review Board and Fellow for the EXCEL Research Project. She is a published author in the field of aging and a licensed social worker. She holds a BA in Psychology from Boston University and an MSW and PhD. from Howard University School of Social Work. She has completed the Master Faculty Program in Gerontology at the George Washington University Center for Aging, Health, and the Humanities.
