Biography

Dr. Jemel Aguilar is an associate professor of social work at Fordham University. He is an accomplished scholar, instructor, and practitioner with over 30 years of experience in the field. As a scholar, Dr. Aguilar writes about human behavior in social environments, with a particular emphasis on populations that are marginalized in American societies. Dr. Aguilar’s research is published in prominent social work journals, including the Journal of Community Practice, the Journal of HIV/AIDS in Social Services, and Advances in Social Work. Dr. Aguilar published several books on Human behavior in the Social Environment, including Decolonizing Human Behavior in the Social Environment: A Reader for an Anti-Oppressive Approach and Multidimensional Human Behavior in the Complex Social Environment. Aguilar teaches courses on social work with children and families, including core concepts in trauma treatment, family-oriented treatment, and social work practice with families. Dr. Aguilar also maintains a small private practice where he supervises LMSWs wanting to focus on the treatment of traumatized children and also works with children and families who have experienced traumatic events.
